Mauritius is part of the Mascarene islands and is surrounded by coral reef and sandy beaches. The 1.27m population largely speak Creole, but English and French are widely spoken in professional and academic settings. Populations also speak Hindi, Telegu, Tamil, Marathi, Urdu and Mandarin, among others.

It has a warm humid summer from November to April and a cool dry winter from June to September. During the summer the weather hits around 24.7C and 20.4C during the winter.

Buses, taxis and the Metro Express help to get around the island, with bus networks covering a large part of it.

In your downtime, go and visit the Botanical Gardens in Pamplemousses (pictured), the Heritage Nature Reserve and Ganga Talao.
